Planned estate gifts enable you to integrate your charitable and financial goals and provide future support for the Claremont Colleges Men’s Rugby Program. They can also provide valuable tax benefits, income, and other financial returns for you and your spouse or loved ones. Contact us at claremontlionsrugbyclub@gmail.com to learn more about how your planned gift can help to ensure the future of the Claremont Colleges Men’s Rugby Program. We also recommend that you work with a knowledgeable attorney, financial planner, and/or CPA to help structure the gift that best suits your needs and adheres to applicable state law.

Common planned giving mechanisms are outlined below.

Charitable Bequests

Estate gifts to the Claremont Colleges Men’s Rugby Program can be made in the form of bequests, which are distributions from your estate through your last will and testament. Bequests provide the advantages of: (1) allowing you to designate your bequest in support of all the program’s activities or to a particular purpose that is meaningful to you (e.g., funding to cover coaching salaries, dues for qualifying players, travel to playoff games, annual banquets, alumni events, and the like); (2) being deductible for estate tax purposes and may have significant tax benefits; and (3) being a wonderful way to create a legacy in your name or for a loved one.

Adding a bequest in your last will and testament for the Claremont Colleges Men’s Rugby Program can be done through a simple codicil reflecting the “Claremont Colleges Men’s Rugby Team” as a named beneficiary. Examples of some common kinds of bequests and bequest language are provided below. You should consult an attorney licensed in your state of domicile before including the below, or other, language in your will.

General Bequests

General bequests are made by designating a specific dollar amount, a particular asset or a fixed percentage of your estate to the cause of your choice.

“I give, devise, and bequeath to the Claremont Colleges Men’s Rugby Team, Claremont, California, the sum of $________ [or a description of the specific asset], for the benefit of the Claremont Colleges Men’s Rugby Team and its general purposes.”

Specific Bequests

Specific bequests are made when a particular item or property is bequeathed for a designated purpose.

“I give, devise, and bequeath to the Claremont Colleges Men’s Rugby Team, Claremont, California, the sum of $_______ [or a description of a specific asset], for the benefit of the Claremont Colleges Men’s Rugby Team, to be used for the following purpose: [state the purpose]. If at any time in the judgment of the trustees of the Claremont Colleges Men’s Rugby Team it is impossible or impracticable to carry out exactly the designated purpose, they shall determine an alternative purpose closest to the designated purpose.”

Residuary Bequests

Residuary bequests are made when you intend to leave the residue portion of your assets after other terms of the will have been satisfied.

“All the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate, both real and personal, I give to the Claremont Colleges Men’s Rugby Team, Claremont, California, for its general purposes.”

Contingency Bequests

Contingency bequests allow you to leave a portion of your estate to a particular charity if your named beneficiary does not survive you.

“I devise and bequeath the residue of the property, real and personal and wherever situated, owned by me at my death, to [name of beneficiary], if [he/she] survives me. If [name of beneficiary] does not survive me, I devise and bequeath my residuary estate to the Claremont Colleges Men’s Rugby Team, Claremont, California, for its general purposes.”

Gifts of Life Insurance

For a relatively small sum in premium payments, supporters of the Claremont Colleges Men’s Rugby program can provide significant future monetary benefit by making gifts using life insurance policies. When a donor makes an outright gift of life insurance, the Claremont Colleges Men’s Rugby Team is named the owner and beneficiary of the policy—either an existing policy or a new one. In addition to creating a meaningful and important legacy, supporting the program through a gift of life insurance can provide significant income and estate tax benefits to you. There are many points that should be considered in planning a life insurance gift and we recommend that you consult your tax advisor regarding the tax implications.

Gifts of Retirement Plan Assets

While tax-deferred assets from IRAs, 401(k)s, Keough plans, profit sharing plans, or 403(b) annuity plans are a great source of retirement income, they are not always the best gift you can provide for your loved ones. Without careful planning, estate and income taxes can consume as much as 75% of these funds, leaving little for your heirs. By designating the Claremont Colleges Men’s Rugby Team as the beneficiary of any remaining funds, you will reduce the tax burden for your heirs and have the satisfaction of knowing that you have provided a meaningful gift to the rugby program.
