Head Coach - Scott Bracken

Scott Bracken joined the Claremont program in 2010 along with Jeremy Ognall.  Bracken has served in several roles over the years, including Head Coach and Forwards Coach.  He is in charge of defensive tactics, forward set plays, strength and conditioning, and mental performance for the Lions.

Bracken’s rugby experience started back in 1988 with San Diego State University, where he and Jeremy Ognall helped SDSU win the USA Rugby Collegiate Division I 15s National Championship in 1987.  He was a multi-year USA Rugby All-American and went on to play 17 years of club rugby after graduating from SDSU, including stints with the USA Eagles (the U.S. National Team), earning the distinction of Eagle No. 235.

Since ending his playing days, Bracken has held several impressive coaching positions, including Head Coach of USA Rugby’s Junior All-Americans and High School All-Americans, as well as Assistant Coach for National Eagle Impact Rugby Academy (EIRA).

Director of Rugby - Jeremy Ognall

Jeremy Ognall, a mainstay in the Southern California rugby scene, joined the Claremont Rugby program in 2010. Since that time, he has served in several roles including Head Coach, Director of Rugby, and Backs Coach. Beyond coaching the technical aspects of the team’s game play, Jeremy has been instrumental in bringing structure, discipline, and general professionalism to the program. These changes have yielded unprecedented levels of success, with the Lions advancing to at least the quarterfinals of the national 15s and 7s playoffs every year since 2014, and winning the USA Rugby Collegiate Division II 15s National Championship in 2010, the NSCRO 15s National Championship in 2017 and 2019, and the NSCRO 7s National Championship in 2018.

Jeremy’s love for rugby comes from his British upbringing and his days of playing for San Diego State University, where he met fellow Claremont Lion coach Scott Bracken. The pair helped SDSU win the USA Rugby Collegiate Division I 15s National Championship in 1987. Ognall stayed on to help coach the program for several years after graduating. Since then, he has helped coach several men’s rugby clubs to national playoff runs, as well as the Southern California Collegiate All-Star Team.

Backs and 7’s Coach - Ray Egan

Ray Egan began coaching the Lions in 2015 through the program’s partnership with Tiger Rugby, and eventually was brought on as a permanent member of the coaching staff. Egan leads the Lions’ 7s team, coaches the backs during 15s season, and works to build and refine the skills of all the program’s players. Egan has extensive experience playing and coaching at all levels, originally having played rugby for Loughborough University in England. While living in Europe, Egan coached the Cashel Rugby Club, and also held roles with the Ireland-based Munster Rugby team and Irish Rugby Football Union.

Since moving to the USA in 2010, Egan has served as Head Coach for the Pacific Rugby Premiership team Belmont Shore RFC; Regional Academy Director for Tiger Rugby; and as Head Coach for the PRO Rugby team the San Diego Breakers. Under Egan’s leadership, Belmont Shore has found significant success, regularly advancing deep into 15s and 7s national playoffs and winning the 2012 USA Division I Club National Championship. Egan’s contributions have been instrumental to the growth of the Lion’s 7s program.
